The SpyC News
Welcome all you Sinners!
This is the SpyC News Show. I will be taking clothes off one article at a time to ensure that I keep your attention. I have very important news to offer you!
First (shoes off), I passed a sign on a church last week that actually said "Sinners Welcome." Can you imagine?
Next (pants off), everywhere I go I see someone pray before they eat their food. I can count on one hand how many times I saw that in Vegas.
Last (what the hell, I'll take it all off), I have never been called Ma'am so many times in my life!
My day was interesting today. I was excited to go to a workshop for a program I am teaching at my school. Then I got to the workshop and it sucked. It didn't really help me. After the workshop, I talked with one of the presenters for a little bit and that is the part that helped me. Too bad I had to wait until 3:00 to get some of my questions answered. I think I should have acquired some happy pills for the day. I spent it being puzzled. I also thought that some of the math they explained might be wrong. So I am asking the few of you that respond on this sight and those of you that might be lurking...yes I hear about you...a few questions. Let's see how smart all of you are.
1.Consider a bar graph that represents perimeter and length of 1 inch tiles. Is it possible for a 1 inch square tile to have a width of 1 in., a length of 0, and the perimeter be 2 in.? I think not, would someone please tell me I'm right...I hate being wrong.
2.Is it true that mode, mean, median, range, etc. are all types of averages. I am thinking it is not, but I might be wrong.
Come on...educate me!

Mode, mean, median, and range are not all about averages.
Mean is the average of the set, or (Sigma[X1+X2+X3...])/N
Mode is the number in a set that is hit the most (i.e) if 20 people in the class got a 84% and the other 10 people hit other numbers, then 84% is the mode, regardless of the mean. Or if you have a set of the following numbers"
2, 3, 10, 6, 11, 10, 5, 9, 7
The mode would be 10, because it is the number that was hit the most.
Median is the exact middle number of a set, irrespective of how many numbers are in the set.
Range is the value of how far it is from the smallest number in a set to the biggest number.
A perimeter is the sum of the length of each side of a polygon (any geometric shape), so a square tile that has a width of 1 would look like this:
1
--------
| |
1 | | 1
| |
--------
1
A square tile will have to have all equal length sides, because that is the definition of square.
If the polygon is a rectangle then you might have different lengths, but you still cannot have a length or a width of zero, otherwise the two dimentional object becomes one dimentional... aka a line.
If the object were three dimentional, then it would no longer be a square, but a cube.
and the perimeter would still have to be a number > 0
In summery, they're fucked. Mode, median, range are not averages, they're statistical tools, but not averages. Only the mean is the average.
And a square with any side that is 1 inch will have all sides be 1 inch, and therefore it must have a perimeter of 4. Otherwise it's not a square.
Therefore it would have a perimeter of 4.
If the tile is square, the length and the width have to be the same.
arghh! it squished my square!
Trying again:
A square tile will have to have all equal length sides, because that is the definition of square.
oooooooooooooooooooooooooo
oooooooooo 1 in oooooooooooo
